9.30 - Charlie's - Tonight is Charlie's Christmas Party, with music from regulars Hank and Ray - if you felt your hangover wasn't up to your colleagues' this morning I recommend hotfooting it down there tonight and you're bound to have the most impressive tomorrow. I might have to get down for a copule to get in training for our office party tomorrow...

8.30 The Crane Lane - The Roaring Forties are in residence bringing a whole lot of seasonal jive, hard to beat for conjuring up good cheer.
Thursday 20th
12.30pm-1.30 The Glucksman Gallery - Free gig this one - The Quiet Club will be bringing christmas presence to gallery visitors. The Quiet Club core members Danny Mcarthy and Mick O'Shea will be joined by regular collaborators Harry Moore,and John Godfrey and Christian Carley to explore the quiet side of christmas using stones, home made instruments, electronics, amplified textures, oscilloscopes, thermins (what the hell is a thermin?), and field recordings. Less than a year in existence, the lads have been turning up at festivals across Ireland and abroad, their first recording will be available there.
8pm Cork School of Music - One of Ireland's best choirs, Cork-based Madrigal '75 present a Christmas concert to rival the gorgeous one we heard from the NCC on Sunday, accented by some fine musicians and poetry readings the core music will be a selection early carols.
8.30 The Crane Lane - The Roaring Forties
9.45 The Corner House - Ray Barron and Two-Time Polka will be raisin' the roof at a free gig in the corner house with plenty of Cajun spirit.

8pm Meade's Wine Bar (55 Oliver Plunket St I think) - Exclusive Info! John O'Brien, Hugh McCarthy and Clare-Ann Lynch have been tackling the fiery romance of Astor Piazzolla's tangos and are giving their first performance in this lovely rough-round-the-edges bar under the name of Trio Nuevo. This should be a right little cracker - come in for a great big glass of the delicious house Malbec which I think is also Argentinian if memory serves me right (ha! unlikely coming out of that joint...) and let your mind wander to the lusty dirt of downtown Buenos Aires.

Hi gang,
Wow what a week of music has just gone by. Things are of course getting a bit festive here and there this week but there's plenty to satisfy any appetite - here's my pick...
Thursday 13th
9pm Bodega White Room - The second STeTLab is on tonight - a curated session of experimental improvisation journeying to other dimensions and featuring guest musicians the Murray Campbell All Stars - Murray Campbell is a fiddler/violinist from California. STeTLab is curated by UCC improv tutor Han-Earl Park. Directly following this totally un-sillyseasonal performance will be the Cork Music Collective Christmas Party. Entry is free and the fun should be kicking off at about 10.30. There'll be instruments there and plenty of opportunity for you to give an interpretation of Jingle Bells if you feel inclined, otherwise just come and enjoy the atmosphere, meet the gang and hang out.
9pm The Roundy - The Roundy are hosting Jinx Lennon, reputed to be fantastic live performer and highly original songwriter. There's lots of music and vid on his web-site if, like me, you've heard the name but you don't actually know what he sounds like. He sure does have alot to say... If you're going be sure and drop into the Bodega afterwards for a late drink at the Cork Music Collective party!

8pm Opera House- Platinum-selling whippersnapper Declan O'Rourke's bringing his drop-dead gorgeous voice to d'Opera House - he has a fairly winning mix of talent and accessibility (er, for which read - my mother likes him) and will I assume be playing a lot of stuff from his new album, I assume with quite a big band (since the publicity is mostly about the album).
8pm Cork School of Music - Half the tickets are already sold for the Irish Chamber Orchestra's concert featuring top Irish pianist John O'Connor and it will no doubt sell out so it would be best to book ahead or get there early. My mole in the orchestra says that working with legendary conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy has been inspiring, full of crazy images and great interpretation so I think this will be a real treat - all the ICO concerts this year have been jaw-dropping so if this is the one the cast and crew are excited about well, it should be pretty memorable.. They're playing Mozart's 15th Symphony (in G), Beethoven's second piano concerto, something by Liszt called Angélus! Priere aux guardian anges (ahh...) and a Bartok divertimento. Anyway..... they'll have The Deans playing who have a myspace here .
10pm - Liquid Lounge Loudtwistedpopmeisters Club Ping Pong hosts Jessie Evans & Toby Dammit (drummer with credits that include working with Iggy Pop) there's a youtube of them here , and some fairly wired-up Glaswegians called Gay Against You.

1pm - Cork School of Music - I HIGHLY recommend following brunch on Sunday with a gorgeous festive programme brought by the National Chamber Choir with an ensemble of strings and trumpets. They're our best choir but we very rarely see them down south (they spend a helluvalot more time in Belfast actually, snipe snipe) so take this opportunity to enjoy some excerpts from Handel's Messiah, some traditional carols and Christmas works by composers such as Monteverdi, Byrd, Vittoria and Vaughan Williams.
8pm - Everyman Palace - (Sigh) Mick Flannery's on in the Everyman with the full band.
8.30pm - Crane Lane The Roaring Forties start a series of Christmas gigs in the Crane Lane, these should be alot fun and they're free. On this occasion Gary Baus will be djing swing music after, further adding value to your initial outlay of nil.
Dammit - it's lunchtime, I'll post earlier in the week next week and that'll probably be the last you hear from me til into the new year. By the way the Cork Chamber Choir who I sing with will be singing in the atrium of the Clarion between 6 and 8 NEXT Fridat 21st, come along and have a drink if you're looking for somewhere to kickstart the Christmas spirit!

Weds 5th - Sunday 9th December
Hi gang,
Hope you caught a good gig or two last week - I didn't make as many as usual myself what with one thing and another. The sound of Ralph Kirschbaum's gorgeous dark cello made a striking addition on Thursday though to the Vanbrugh Quartet for Schubert's fairly heartstopping C major Quintet and I liked the new works, especially Seoirse Bodley's, but jeez did the audience drive me mad. Crossing and uncrossing legs, sighing, fiddling with programmes, unwrapping sweets... it sounds like the back row of transition year accountancy not a concert audience and made me start to look forward to the West Cork Chamber Music Festival again... God I'm a sap, ok rant over - there's too much too look forward to...

9pm Cyprus Avenue - The bassplayer from the Redneck Manifesto, Richie Egan's Jape is in town. Not as hard-rocking as the Rednecks, it's about the songs man and more in a pop vein but worth checking out if you like that kinda thing.
Thursday 6th
1.10pm, Crawford Gallery - Today is the chance to hear the winner of the hotly contested Axa International Piano Competition (2006), Romain Descharmes with a mystery programme, he was last heard playing Mozart, Brahms and Chopin you can be fairly sure that it will be easily enjoyed music and very beautifully played. 8.30, Bodega White Room - Slowburn, a CMC Film & Music Triple Bill - I'm excited to have an old friend from Thomastown in Cork for the first time - Stephen Buck is a singer-songwriter who is primarily a playwright and writes great quirky lyrics that I'm hoping you'll all enjoy. We also have David O'Riordain, a singer-songwriter in the Cork Music Collective (your hosts for the night) who I'm really looking forward to hearing and I think he will probably fit in nicely beside Stephen. And at the heart of the night we're showing Scooter's great 30 minute film Torture is US which fought off stiff competition in the Cork Film Festival to win the Made in Cork award. One of the first events in the festival to sell out, many people haven't got to see this seriously funny film yet - so here's another chance! All this for €8? Where would you be going....

8pm - Cork School of Music Unless you have some kind of holiday booked or a seriously hot date I recommend getting your ass down to be blown away by the crazy breakneck balkan brass bonanza that will be the Boban Markovich Orkestar from Serbia. In fact scratch that, bring your hot date and you can be sure their blood will be right up by the end of the night... A global sensation, the New York Times described a performance as "Dance music that was almost brutal in its gleeful efficiency", bringing touches of klezmer, funk, tango and jazz to that infectious Balkan sound and these guys are such good players they have given masterclasses at the Juilliard School of Music. I've never had an opportunity to hear anything like this and am really excited - please come and enjoy it so promoters will start bringing more!
10pm - Liquid Lounge Club Ping Pong are treating their guests' ears to Fist Fite. Nihl describes them as a "raucous keyboard/drums/screaming trio" from Portland Oregon, USA. "It's - get drunk and howl at the moon - type music". Hip Cork band Hooray for Humans will be playing support...

8pm - Crane Lane 2006 winners of the BBC Folk Awards Flook were recommended to me by Mags O'Sullivan so they MUST be really good - sorry I didn't get this into the mailout. Here's their website
8pm - Triskel The hard-working Carducci Quartet are back in town after the success of their September festival, playing in the intimate theatre at Triskel. Multi-award-winners, this half-Irish, half-British quartet has a lovely programme of Haydn, Britten and Beethoven lined up....

Nov 29th - Dec 4th
Hey everyone,
Hopefully everybody got to hear some of the last week's great array of music in Cork - we had a great night with the National Symphony Orchestra in City Hall on Thursday and reports from the Crash Ensemble / Iarla O Lionaird were great I was very sorry to miss it (I gather they brought the house down at Ionad Cultúrtha in Ballyvourney on Friday night for their last concert of the project). I'm sure everyone who enjoyed Hadasha either in the last week or during the summer will wish them the very best in future projects.
Congratulations to those lucky lads that last week won tickets from the blog version of this mail for the Boban Markovich Orckestar on Saturday the 8th - it is going to be a massive blast of a gig and will not come our way again so put it in your diaries lads, it'll be a ripper... And now for this week!

8pm Aula Maxima, UCC - We're delighted to celebrate the RTE Vanbrugh Quartet's 21st anniversary of their residency in Cork tonight when they will be joined by Internationally-renowned cellist Ralph Kirschbaum for Schubert's C major quintet - it's taken me a while but in recent years I have finally got over my schoolyard dislike of Schubert, based solely on the version of the Trout Quintet that we had to listen to endlessly in school. I now realise Schubert rocks. This quintet was, I think, his last instrumental work, written when he was just about my age and dying a horrible death from syphillis - this is important because it permeates his music (the Radiohead of the early 19th-century maybe?), he's grappling with the ultimate emotions and themes - horror and fear, beauty and madness... The concert will also include 3 brand-new miniatures commissioned for the occasion from Irish composers Deirdre Gribbin, Seóirse Bodley and Ronan Guilfoyle.

8pm Triskel - New York-based Indian saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa joins Indo-Dutch drummer and Irish bassist Ronan Guilfoyle to form the MSG trio, bringing together Eastern and jazz musics together in what promises to be a seriously other-worldly experience. Rhythm-fiends and melody hawks will all be well-catered for - if you can't quite swing a foreign holiday this weekend this should make an excellent alternative.

Welcome to this week's gigblog thing.
***For the first two visitors who were directed here from my e-mail I have a special treat - a pair of tickets to see the Boban Marovic Orkestar at the new Cork School of Music on Saturday 8th December courtesy of the Improvised Music Company, who work tirelessly to bring great music to Ireland. This is going to be a fantastic concert - really high-octane Balkan brass (as if there was any other kind, but these Serbian guys are regarded by many to be the best going) with touches of klezmer, funk, tango and jazz. It's going to be a whole lot of fun! If you'd like to go mail me and the first two I receive will get a pair of tickets each.*** Both sets of tickets now found homes - thanks for clicking through all the same....
Now for upcoming gigs this week - it's perhaps a little leaner than of late but some real quality stuff all the same.
Thursday 22nd
8pm City Hall - I'll be at there to see the National Symphony Orchestra with guest conductor Takuo Yuasa and pianist Miceál O'Rourke in a typically energetic and attractive programme with an Eastern flavour - Shostakovich's Festive Overture, Chopin's colourful first piano concerto and Tchaikovsky's folk-inspired Little Russian Symphony.
8pm Aula Maxima, UCC - There's more folk inspiration in the Crash Ensemble's Strange Folk programme which premiered earlier in the year. Crash are Ireland's premiere New Music ensemble and this is a great chance to see what they do - they come to Cork rarely (they probably tour internationally more often) so if you're interested in what's hip in contemporary music come along. Trad fans will be interested to see Iarla O Lionáird (the Ciul Aodha Sean-Nós singer with the gorgeous voice part of the Afro-Celt Sound System and loads more besides) featured.
Friday 23rd -
8pm Triskel - The Brady Carrothers Trio sees US pianist and composer Bill Carrothers (an 'unsung hero of 21st Century piano') on European tour teaming up with two of Ireland's new generation of top jazzers - drummer Kevin Brady and David Redmond on double bass.
Saturday 24th -
10pm - Liquid Lounge Club Ping Pong hosts the drummer-led Rarely Seen Above Ground and new cork band Cars in Walls.
Tuesday 27 th -
12am Crane Lane - Hadasha treat us to another gorgeous performances from John Zorn's Masada - word on the street has it that there may be new Zorn material somewhere in the Hadasha pipeline so this might be your last chance to see the current set for a while. It's proven hugely popular with Cork audiences and attracts a great crowd, go join em if you haven't yet! ... flyer here

8pm Triskel - the London Conchord Ensemble visit Cork as part of their irish tour - top notch musicians playing music that is played less often due to unuasual instrumentation - everything from Haydn to contempoary stuff the programme is here

There's a particularly nice variety of music to choose from this week and lots of interesting punters waiting to bump into you in the queue / smoking room / jacks so give the telly a rest, throw the dog a big bone and beat a path down to....
Thursday 15th
8pm Cork School of Music - Hardcore classical fans get the rare opportunity to hear the whole of the first book of Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier by a master. Peter Donohoe is widely regarded as one of the greatest living British pianists and looks like a good guy and all. If you like your Bach this will be a real treat, if you're not sure it'll be one helluva way to find out.
8pm Triskel - Jazzers will be treated to Trio Norge, a trio led by Irish guitarist John Moriarty of Irish group 'Organics', and featuring the talents of Norwegian musicians Daniel Formo (organ) and Håkon Mjåset Johansen (drums), both members of the award winning trio 'Solid' from Norway.
9.30 Tikki Lounge - Brian Deady's Land on the Moon project makes a debut - Brian has the gift of a really great voice (boy did we try hard to get him to join Cork Chamber Choir) and a funky soul and plays with loops and effects live in a kinda Jamie Lidell stylee. Will be a pretty cool place to hang out for the night.
Friday 16th -
8pm Triskel - But wiz all this jazz zey are really spoiling us! Fred Hersch is a seminal pianist and composer, beautiful stuff not too much fear of squawks and bumps here, touring Ireland with his trio.
Saturday 17th -
9pm - Charlie's Bar - Switchbored are playing, haven't seen em yet but should be a safe enough bet for a Saturday night....
10pm - Liquid Lounge Club Ping Pong will have something on for all the alternative heads who want to avoid the rest of town on Saturday night. And if you don't like the music you can hang out on the roof.
Sunday 18th -
8pm Triskel - Donal Dineen's in town curating a live music gig - it's kind of unclear who will actually be playing but it should be pretty good I'd say....
Monday 19th -
1pm Cork Institute of Technology - Mick Flannery's playing as part of CIT Arts Fest. He's so dreamy. I'd say the chances of hearing/seeing anything much will be slim though...
9pm Crane Lane - I have been waiting a long time to see Caribou again since he/they blew my mind a couple of years ago in this self-same building (boy was it a different place then...). Not one but 2 great drummers in this trio (yes, with 2 full kits) Christ did they pack a punch. Not sure of the exact line up this time round but he's Canadian so you know, think we can trust him.... Feckin' brilliant, all Monday nights should be like this

Hello Cork gig-goers,
I've been lax recently with my giglist - there was so much going on around the jazz and I didn't want to get accused of plugging my own interests (no need as it turned out, Clear Sky sold out again!)... There's some really good stuff going on this week so I said I'd let you know....
Thursday 8th
3 to choose from, a bit of a killer really to be honest....
8pm Aula Maxima UCC - The Vanbrugh Quartet will be playing the unforgettably brilliant Different Trains by Steve Reich if you haven't heard this seminal piece of 20th-century music then this is a fantastic opportunity - briefly, the piece uses lots of prerecorded stuff on trains, juxtaposing the trains that transported jews in the holocaust with the US train journeys the composer made as a child - there's a layer of prerecorded quartet on top of that (they'll be using the Kronos Quartet version) and then on top of that you have the quartet playing - the music comes out of speech recordings and train sounds, it's hard to explain but fantastic to hear - check out this for a taster . They're also playing 2 gorgeous string quartets by Schubert. This concert will be brought to you by uz in the Cork Orchestral Society. €18 (members €12)
8pm Liquid Lounge - Charles Hayward, who I gather is a kick-ass drummer of the highest order will be headlining a triple bill with Safe and someone listed as KFDS. Dunno how much this is, it's not listed on the Liquid Lounge website.
8.45 Roundy - For the adventurous among you we in the Cork Music Collective are holding a Triple Bill, I think I can get away with quoting my own publicity here..."The triple headline is representative of the collective's work, featuring two very different performances from local projects and a third from out of town—Birmingham's Bruce Coates and 3xe. Opening the concert will be the launch of Stet Lab, a project arising from a new and innovative partnership with UCC's Music Department and the brainchild of improvisation tutor Han-earl Park. Stet Lab provides a unique space for improvising musicians from all backgrounds to meet and work together. A curated jam-session, it aims to provide a public platform where music can "mutate, diversify and hybridise", offering the unique excitement of hearing music at the moment it's created. Spank, an established local act, brings an uncompromising hard edge to his original electro-acoustic blues in highly-charged stage performances. His influences, from Tom Waits, Howlin' Wolf and Captain Beefheart to PJ Harvey and Patti Smith give a clue to his world but this man's material is very much his own. From Birmingham, saxophonist Bruce Coates has been heavily involved with free jazz, free improvisation and experimental music for more than 15 years. Co-founder of the Birmingham Improvisers' Orchestra and a veteran recording artist he will work with a specially-formed band, 3xe, responding to the unique situation." Just €10 folks, or €5 if you're a CMC member.

Happily word has finally caught on, there was a queue the length of the School of Music for tickets last time they played - this one's a real crowd pleaser with easy-on-the-eye soprano Ailish Tynan joining them for Purcell, Prokofiev, Britten, Fauré and Tchikovsky.
Saturday 10th -
1pm - Cork School of Music Hear James Taylor (er, not not that one, the other one) play the school of music organ - a mixture of old and new organ music I'd say this'll blow any Friday night hangover to kingdom come... €10/5 i think.
8pm - Cork Opera House - Jack L's playing, can't ever say he's not damn good, tickets are probably fairly steep though...
10pm - Liquid Lounge Club Ping Pong have White Mice (Cheezuz Saves) for your ... I was going to say delectation but I just followed the link to their myspace... (shudders) not for the faint at heart

There's a a fantastic variety of quality music round town over the next few days with an almost embarrassing amount to choose from - my own many gig visits over recent weeks have suggested to me that there may actually be too much good stuff going on - where's the damn audience half the time?
Cork's a small city and we like it that way - but we can't expect promoters and musicians to put great on at a loss all the time. Go on, round up a few friends and take them out to something they've never heard before - make a night of it and have something to talk about with them! Try something you wouldn't normally (the early music gig on Saturday night it was f***ing fantastic) - it's like taking a holiday... except alot cheaper and better for the environment.
By the way one intrepid gig go-er has set a review blog - check out http://www.thisreviewer.blogspot.com/ for reviews of all kinds of gigs - (the People's Republic of Cork are setting up a direct link to it from their homepage but it's not quite right yet...) if anyone wants her e-mail to invite her to gigs contact me and I'll put you on to her.

Thursday-
6pm The fantastic Hadasha who have been opening Cork's ears to the music of John Zorn to packed crowds at The Tikki Lounge and the Roundy (and will be launching Art Trail at the invite-only launch on Friday) are playing at the gorgeous Glucksman gallery. It's a free gig (as Glucksman Thursday gigs always are) so this is a no-brainer.
9pm Some sort of brain MIGHT come in useful for the Cork Music Collective 100% music table quiz in the Roundy (poster attached). We need to get some cash together to help pay for hiring the PA for gigs so please come and join us for a night of craic with special guests the young whippersnapping Impressionists - table of 4 is €20 and there's plenty of good prizes including concert tickets and the like.
8pm The Syrius Trio will be playing in the new Cork School of Music auditorium - if you haven't heard of them yet you will have soon now they have Music Network behind them - the trio is violinist Elizabeth Cooney ( described by Martin Lovett of Amadeus Quartet as "extraordinarily gifted", spotted by Tully Potter of the Strad as "a talent to watch" and credited for her "remarkable virtuosity" by the Sunday Tribune), New York-based cellist Jane O'Hara and pianist Bobby Chen from Malaysia who is making a serious name for himself internationally. They're playing Schubert, Mendelssohn, David Wallace and Benjamin Dwyer....
8pm Or you could get seriously rocked by Canadian punkprogrockers Nomeansno in the Crane Lane - they're legends but will the sound there do them justice? The Freak Accident is supporting them if that means anything to anyone...?
Friday-
Actually Friday's pretty quiet for those who didn't make the Art Trail launch list, typical, eh?
9pm Rest are in Cyprus Avenue - if you like loud lush rock sounds and haven't heard them yet get on down
or maybe you could save your ears and really blow them apart at the Liquid Lounge tomorrow....
Saturday-
8pm Art Trail are presenting The Quiet Club, (Cork's sound artists Danny McCarthy and Mick O'Shea) who will be joined by all sorts of weird and wonderful guests to launch the sound we are now CD. Open minds and open ears will likely get a whole lot out of this... music made with unconventional instruments and often heavily processed - last time I saw them composer God Johnfrey oops John Godfrey (who'll be with them on Saturday) was playing the inside of a grand piano with a wok) - it's a lot of fun as well as being very musical and definitely good conversation fodder.
10pm Saturday nights have got a whole lot better for altrock heads (and the kind of girls and boys who like to pick up the Cork's beautiful altrock types) with Club Ping Pong (this is where all those gorgeous hip cats have been quietly gathering to avoid the usual Saturday night din) - live international bands in a club with a big smoking area on the roof - who'd a thunk it. This week they're offering NYC's Meneguar -" a very good guitar-driven band whose singer sort of sounds like the guy from The Hold Steady. There is a positive vibe to this melodic (mostly) punk rock, complete with Superchunk-friendly riffs and Les Savy Fav-friendly angularity. They are a band void of pretension that wants to write really good rock songs. If you liked the indie rock of the 90's, you will like Meneguar." They'll be supported by Hope is Noise.
Right that's enough for this week take your pick and for jaysus sake get out there!

8pm Art Trail are presenting The Quiet Club, (Cork's sound artists Danny McCarthy and Mick O'Shea) who will be joined by all sorts of weird and wonderful guests to launch the sound we are now CD. Open minds and open ears will likely get a whole lot out of this... music made with unconventional instruments and often heavily processed - last time I saw them composer God Johnfrey oops John Godfrey (who'll be with them on Saturday) was playing the inside of a grand piano with a wok) - it's a lot of fun as well as being very musical and definitely good conversation fodder.
10pm Saturday nights have got a whole lot better for altrock heads (and the kind of girls and boys who like to pick up the Cork's beautiful altrock types) with Club Ping Pong (this is where all those gorgeous hip cats have been quietly gathering to avoid the usual Saturday night din) - live international bands in a club with a big smoking area on the roof - who'd a thunk it. This week they're offering NYC's Meneguar -" a very good guitar-driven band whose singer sort of sounds like the guy from The Hold Steady. There is a positive vibe to this melodic (mostly) punk rock, complete with Superchunk-friendly riffs and Les Savy Fav-friendly angularity. They are a band void of pretension that wants to write really good rock songs. If you liked the indie rock of the 90's, you will like Meneguar." They'll be supported by Hope is Noise.

This is just a quick warning friends: tickets for the Avishai Cohen Trio & E.S.T. (a fairly stupendous double-bill of trios) is almost sold-out (despite the fact that Jazz Fest programmes only seem to be hitting the streets today). I got a few tickets a couple of days ago and by then there was only back rows downstairs and the first few upstairs were gone - I highly recommend snapping up the last ones soon if you're hoping to go! It's on Friday 29th October in the Everyman, their booking office number is 021 450 1673 - tickets are a hefty €35 but to be honest if they were playing in separate gigs I'd be recommending seeing em both anyway so it's really good enough value...
On other jazz fest notes Diego Ramirez (drummer extraordinaire with Clear Sky Ensemble) told me Elaine Elias is amazing, she's sharing a bill with the Phil Woods Quintet on the Saturday also at the Everyman.

Or you could nip out to Fota House for the second East Cork Early Music Festival concert for a performance of (not terribly early) Schubert's Winterreise performed by John Elwes, the hook here being that pianist Una Hunt will perform on an 1807 Clementi square piano. You'd want to be a lieder-lover (there are plenty) and it's a small (and exquisite) space so I'd say call 021 4270022 fast if you want to try and get a ticket.
TOMORROW Friday-
Boy am I sorry to have to miss the Irish Chamber Orchestra's first gig this season when they will be joined by the (I know it sounds preposterous) reputedly rather sexy recorder player Piers Adams (it's the fella from Red Priest who people have been going crazy about) - described by Classic CD mag as "Beyond virtuosity into the realms of improbability". And if you haven't yet heard the best orchestra in Ireland, well - they are seriously, seriously good. (This one's also in the Cork School of Music)

I'll be helping the East Cork Early Music Festival out in the Cork School of Music where they are hosting the London Handel Players with a gorgeous programme of concertos by Handel, Vivaldi, Bach, Telemann (who I've been getting into recently) and Quantz (who I've never heard of). I totally trust festival director Sarah Cunningham and can confidently recommend this one.
SUNDAY
Richard Sweeney's in Fota House at 1pm performing bewitching music by Bach Weiss and Baron on the Baroque lute. This is part of the East Cork Early Music Festival also - there's loads more going on but I'm just mentioning the stuff close to the city, check out www.eastcorkearlymusic.ie for the full programme.

to quote my badself... "Cork Orchestral Society is delighted to host a festival of chamber music featuring the critically acclaimed Carducci Quartet in the stunning Curtis Auditorium at the new Cork School of Music from Friday September 14th to Sunday September 16th. Prizewinners in no less than 6 International Chamber Music Competitions in the space of 4 years, the Carducci Quartet is recognised as one of Europe's top string quartets.
The festival will also feature a host of other top musicians, including Cian Ó Dúill (viola), Louisa Dennehy (flute), Vincent Condon (clarinet), Rory Dempsey (double bass), Stephen Kelly (percussion) and pianists Ciara Moroney, Rebecca ?ápova and Kirsten ?ápova. The festival will present a fantastic range of music from Haydn and Mozart, Fauré and Poulenc, Dvo?ák and Rakhmaninov and many more.
One highlight is sure to be the Festival Ensemble's performance of Saint-Saëns' much-loved masterpiece Carnival of the Animals, a must for music lovers of all ages. The performance will feature leading actress Fiona Shaw (of Harry Potter fame) who will read from Ogden Nash's humourous verses written especially for the work.
On Friday September 14th composer Ian Wilson will give a free pre-concert talk at 7pm in the new Cork School of Music's Lecture Theatre 1 to introduce us to his string quartet unbroken white line which will receive its first Irish performance in the opening concert. Audience will also have the opportunity to hear David Wallace's new Flute Sonata at a lunchtime concert on Saturday 15th – as Hochtief Fellow in Compositon at CIT Cork School of Music Wallace's first string quartet proved extremely popular at the RTÉ Vanbrugh String Quartet's 21st Anniversary performance in June.

Polka Madre y la Comezon is a musical group which has surprised its audiences with the originality of its compositions and the energy, sarcasm and humor of its live shows. After two and a half years since its conception in Mexico City, Polka Madres principle influences lie in Jewish music and the old sounds of Gypsy and Eastern European cultures. Each piece, however, varies in style, rhythm and time signature. Their repertoire ranges from euphoric polkas, melancholic waltzes to punk, rock and passages of classical music. The vibrancy of the band is also drawn from the origin of its members: Mexico City, Portland, Oregon and Helsinki, Finland. Each member brings his or her cultural influences into the compositions. Mexico Citys raw, concrete landscape is what binds the band together. The citys ruckus, violence and camaraderie make music and emotions more intense. Sadness is sadder, faster and harder becomes reckless; beauty is rare and hence more treasured. The grittiness of the city leaks into even the finest klezmer clarinet piece and the fast dance songs are all the more rowdy. The band mostly lives together in an ex-warehouse and spends most of its time creating music.
